Membership

Can I be involved with the Umoja Flute Institute if I am not of African descent?

Absolutely! All are welcome in the Umoja family. As an affinity organization we aim to create opportunities for flutists of African descent however all are welcome to attend our workshops, audit masterclasses, become a member, and donate. Join us in celebrating the contributions of flutists of African descent in music.

I am a student, what opportunities are available for me specifically?

At this time, our workshop schedule has not been determined. We have asked our community of flutists to submit proposals to present a wide range of opportunities due May 1st. We also encourage students to attend and apply any of our masterclasses. As an organization, we are dedicated to providing flutists of all levels and abilities with the tools to thrive. Register to attend our workshops and masterclasses ! There will be something for everyone.

Are the workshops virtual?

Yes! All events will be held virtually.

Are opportunities to present limited to performers?

No! We aim to celebrate the diverse contributions of flutists of African descent (educators, administrators, etc).

What types of subject matter are you looking for?

We are looking to represent the diverse experiences of flutists in our community. All ideas are welcome! Speak to your passion. Here is a list of possible subjects:

  • Flute and Hip Hop

  • Discussion: Navigating professional ensembles as flutists of colour
  • Black Entrepreneurship in the field of Music
  • Managing music finances in societal inequity; looking at college and beyond

Masterclasses

What is a masterclass?

A masterclass is an educational environment where students have the opportunity to receive support and instruction from a master teacher.

Are the masterclasses virtual?

Yes! All events will be held virtually.

Is there scholarship available and if so what’s the process?

Yes! There is scholarship funding available and it is awarded by merit. Please indicate in the designated sections of the Masterclass form if you’d like to be considered for financial assistance.

Are scholarships available to members of all ages?

Yes!

What age group and/or playing level is the masterclass geared to?

Masterclasses will cater to a wide range of abilities and ages through both traditional masterclass formats and group learning classes. (All flutists including students, young professionals, amateurs and veteran players are welcome to participate in our classes).

Do I have to attend all of the events?

No, but we highly recommend that all participants attend as many events as they can.

If I’m only available to attend one or two day’s worth of events during the summer institute, could I get a day pass?

  • Student Day Audit Pass/Includes 1 or more events: $30
  • Non-Student Day Audit Pass/ Includes 1 or more events: $35

Will the summer institute events be recorded and viewable after the institute is over?

Recorded events will be available to those who purchase a full membership.
